Script (2) Time-out with Albert
2009, HDV, 1 minute 50 seconds
The Script series is an attempt by the artist to explore the textuality of the written word while considering issues pertaining to film's specificity. Shot where the artist works they take the form of filmic exercises of studio activity. Script (2) Time-out with Albert is the second in the series, showing the artist making words. The words are relevant to the filmed activity or make reference to filmic terms.
In Script (2) Time-out with Albert, the artist masked as Einstein reviews the comedic genre of slapstick, a style which was explored extensively during the golden era of black and white silent movies, encapsulated in the word 'brilliant'. This work was prompted by Rancière's book, The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intellectual Emancipation, which describes the emancipatory education of Joseph Jacotot, a post-Revolutionary philosopher of education who discovered that he could teach things that he himself did not know and by the curatorial question "What would you teach a hero?".
There are 10 films in the full series, the first 4 are completed, they consist of the filmed words ‘twinkle’, ‘brilliant’, ‘temps mort’ and ‘ What one man does is something done, in some measure by all men.’ The full planned sequence will include ‘fin', ‘actuality’, ‘virtual’, ‘loop’, ‘déjà-vu’ and ‘cut’. Some of the issues considered within this are slapstick, documentary, narrative structures, film noir, cinematic devices, closure and portraiture. The series explores the ‘magic’ of cinema while critiquing the nature of its medium and history.
