1999, video, 40 seconds continuous loop

The Clearing is a video work, consisting of the filming of a perfect circle, making a vertical slice of the horizon, cutting equally into sea and sky. With the viewpoint fixed and straight ahead, the camera circles an exact 360 degree vertical rotation, going down and underwater and then out and arcing through the sky before submerging into the water again.

This continuous loop consists of a view curving through a blue celestial sequence of the sky, before the grey line of the horizon comes up slow and overcast, then into a fall downwards, the green sea rushing up before the water envelopes the view through a disorienting sequence underwater of seaweed until the colour blue appears above water and the view breaks open into the lucid arc of sky again.

In the unfolding of a long take in a cinematic image, the viewer inhabits an eternal present that within The Clearing emotes a circling of the edge of the two sided coin of anxiety and hope.
